My Swine Flu Can Beat Up Your Bird Flu

Remember swine flu? Remember bird flu before that? These influenza strains have been massively covered by television news channels breathlessly disclosing every new flu death and accompanying these disclosures with speculation about just how nigh the end might be. Reality outside of TVland tells us a different story. The CDC estimates that regular old flu kills somewhere around 36,000 people a year in the United States. The CDC also estimates that somewhere around 12,500 people died from the swine flu in the United States between April of 2009 and April of 2010. There have been no reports of people coming down with bird flu in the United States this year.

We should by all means continue to wash our hands. But to counter the swine flu and bird flu hysteria that’s spreading around like some kind of virus, why not slap this sticker onto your car and remind people it’s OK to inhale?
