We have always been the 99% — those Americans who don’t make a killing each year but are just trying to get by. We’re students looking for a future that isn’t so bleak. We’re teachers who make less and are expected to do more every year. We’re clerks and nurses and carpenters and the unemployed who are looking, looking, looking for work. What we all have in common is that we’ve had it up to here with the cozy, elite 1% acting like the rest of us have no rights, like they own us. From Wall Street to Boston, from Birmingham to San Francisco, occupation protests are being spontaneously created by Americans who are sick and tired of watching corporations run the American economy into the ground… and watching politicians in Congress do nothing about it.

At all these protests, one chant has been heard over and over again, one motto seen on protest signs across America: We Are The 99 Percent!

We are the 99 percent that does almost all the work in America, yet gets only a tiny share of the wealth. We are the 99 percent that holds America together, but gets shut out of the political discussion in Washington D.C. We are the 99 percent that keeps on being asked to take all the sacrifice, while the top 1 percent gets more tax breaks and subsidies.

We are the 99 percent, and look to the streets – because we are not going to remain the silent majority any longer.

Economic justice is overdue.

War is the Answer to an Insane Question

If the question is “How can we preserve the practice of drafting child soldiers?” then war is the answer.

If the question is “How can we blow 4 trillion dollars in a decade?” then war is the answer.

If the question is “How can we enrich unaccountable corporations?” then war is the answer.

War is the answer, all right. It’s the answer to a series of insane questions.

Hey John Boehner, Shut Down THIS!!

The big-necked Speaker of the House may think he can shut down the government, but he can’t shut you down. He can’t shut down your right to free speech. He can’t shut down your indignation at the gall of it all.

He’s wrecked the country like Republicans seem to need to do every decade or so, so go ahead and tell him off: Hey John Boehner, Shut Down THIS!!

Retire Dreier!

Sometimes, a political slogan is born out of linguistic happenstance as much as from political need. That’s the case with a new slogan that’s made its way onto at least a couple of congressional campaign bumper stickers.

The slogan, at its core, relies on a simple rhyme: Retire Dreier.

“Dreier” in this slogan refers to Congressman David Dreier, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 26th district of California, on the marginal hills of metro Los Angeles. Dreier has run into some trouble recently, given some comments he made in a speech last week, saying that when it comes to the Patriot Act, guarantees of liberty and justice aren’t as important as the desire for security.

One bumper sticker, with a simply blue and black design, reads: Retire David Dreier – He’s out of touch with our values. Dreier may want to note that many Republicans value liberty much more than the big government apparatus of a Security State of the sort that’s been set up under the Patriot Act.

Another manifestation of the Retire Dreier slogan comes on a bumper sticker that advises: Time to Retire David Dreier, and shows a rather glum-faced Dreier to the right of the slogan.

The message, I think, is that David Dreier should choose to retire himself, or voters, in the primary election or general election of 2012, will choose retirement for Dreier.

Don’t Like Socialism? Get Off the Highway!

Every time I read someone on the internet proclaiming about the evils of socialism, how government never gets anything right, I find myself wondering if they are aware of the origins of the internet itself. And every time I come across a bumper sticker condemning socialism on I10 or I40 or I90, I wonder why the people whose cars sport such bumper stickers would choose to travel on the interstate highways. The interstate highway system, you know, is a socialist big government program.

Come on, people, be consistent. You don’t like socialism? Then get off the highway!

Hutaree Bumper Sticker: Crazed Christian Reconstructionists

Nine members of the Hutaree sect of Christian fundamentalists are up on federal charges of plotting to kill police officers for Christ.

It almost sounds funny, doesn’t it? I mean, come on, the group names itself Hutaree, and is led by people named “Captain Hutaree” and “Guhighllo?” What a laugh, huh?

And then we remember that these reconstructionists, eager to create a kingdom with their understanding of God’s Law, decided that it would be a good idea to kill cops for Christ. Call it like you see it with this bumper sticker against the Hutaree: it adopts the Hutaree badge, right down to the CCR acronym at the bottom. But in this sticker, CCR stands for Crazed Christian Reconstructionism.

Question authority. Question religious violence. Confront the Hutaree and their fellow travelers with this anti-Hutaree sticker.

What Kind of Party Animal Is a Blue Dog Democrat?

Another great slogan against the Blue Dog Democrats comes from The Proud Liberal, a site for activists who are dedicated to defending the progressive principles, whether they’re aligned with the Democratic Party or more independent sources. The slogan comes from the problem the Blue Dogs seem to be having with settling on a single political identity, and uses the concept of the animals that represent the political parties to drive the concept home.

A Blue Dog Democrat is nothing more than a GOP elephant trying to make an ass out of itself.

Blue Dogs Belong On Kids TV, Not In Congress

“With me and you, and my dog Blue, we can do anything that we want to do.”

The last phrase of this famous refrain from children’s television seems to be something that right wing Democrats in the U.S. Congress have a special identification with. Members of the Blue Dog Coalition seems to believe that they can do anything that they want to do, and still get the support of Democratic voters.

The Blue Dogs play a rather nasty political game of running for office as members of the Democratic Party, but then turning coat in office to work against the Democratic Party, helping congressional Republicans instead. The Blue Dogs in Congress have blocked legislation on the very issues that gained the Democratic Party its majority in the first place: Climate change, health care reform, equal rights, and restoration of the Constitution are all 2008 issues that the Blue Dogs have joined with Republicans to deny.

The progressive majority of the Democratic Party has had enough. We didn’t suffer through the Bush years just to have the Democratic-controlled government promote the same awful regressive policies all over again. That’s why, in 2010, the rallying cry for progressives is: Blue dogs belong on children’s TV, not in our Congress.
