“Liberal” is a word that has been cheapened over time, but think about the essence of it: a person who stands up for liberty, a person who supports the idea that we should be free to be and speak and act and love as we please, so long as it hurts none. Support for the Constitution. Support for diversity of thought. Belief that dissent is truly the highest form of patriotism. These are liberal ideas of which every American should be proud.
In Maine, there is a struggle over the liberal qualities that have long defined the state. Out-of-state money has flooded into efforts to take away Mainers’ marriage equality. Big business interests are trying to suck money out of the state with marginal wind farm efforts that depend on subsidies, while local community activists struggle toward the kind of self-determined, community-driven, community-benefit wind project that is working for the Fox Islands.
Will Maine be turned into just another New Jersey, just another corporate subdivision? Or will the Maine liberal tradition persevere?
