Peace
You might call peace the forgotten issue, or you could say that America has antiwar fatigue. It isn’t that Americans oppose the war in Iraq any less than they have before. Rather, it’s that they don’t know what to do to oppose war any more. They’ve tried, and failed, and having failed, wondered if it’s even worth trying to speak out for peace any more. Will it make any difference?
One thing is for sure: Inaction will absolutely ensure that no difference will be made. Anti-war activism does not guarantee an end to war, but anti-war apathy ensures that war will not end.
For that reason, we believe that it’s important to continue to make the basic statement against war that comes with putting a bumper sticker for peace on the back of a car. That bumper sticker is an important statement of vigilance, because true vigils aren’t just held for a few hours with candles and moments of silence. Vigils are held for years on end, even when a cause seems hopeless.
It doesn’t have to be something big, but do something. Start by putting an anti-war bumper sticker on the back of your car again.
