In this oval bumper sticker, an Orwellian all-seeing eye is incorporated into the classic icon of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. The message: we may have a new president who ran on hope and change, but under his new administration, Big Brother is Still Watching. The Patriot Act is still in effect. The Military Commissions Act is still in effect. The FISA Amendments Act is still in effect. Barack Obama has committed to continue using tools of warrantless surveillance in contravention of the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The election is over. It doesn’t matter whether Barack Obama was on “your team,” or whether you campaigned as part of “his team.” As of his inauguration, he will be the principal executor of a surveillance state. As long as the president and the agents of the president are watching, it is incumbent upon defenders of liberty to watch back.

What is on the collective mind of liberal thinkers as the year 2008 draws to a close? One indication is in the choice of stickers liberals choose to decorate their cars with. We’re a pretty sticky bunch, we lefties, and some ideas (Get Your Laws Off My Body, Not all Who Wander are Lost) are perennial favorites, while others (That One ’08) are more fleeting. Here are the notions most often sticking in our craws right now (click on any of these bumper stickers to get one for yourself):

1.

Barack 2008, Michele 2016 Bumper Sticker. Looking forward a bit much, are we? You can’t call us a dour bunch anymore, I think.

2.

Go Solar Bumper Sticker. The sun rises on this car decal.

Obama ’08: Mission Accomplished. Yes, yes, we heard. It’s true if the mission is an election. If the mission is the implementation of progressive policy then we’re not there yet.

4.

Peace, Earth, Love. Aw, how sweet… and literally iconic on this wordless bumper sticker.

5.

Welcome to America: Now Speak Cherokee. A rejoinder to those who suppose that English was invented in the USA.

1-20-09 Car Decal. Celebrating the Inauguration of President Barack Obama pre-emptively. Better than pre-emptive war!

8.

That SUV Makes Your Butt Look Big. Or does it make your head look small?

O: The President Bumper Sticker. It’s not W: The President any longer.

10.

Don’t Let the Door Hit You On the Way Out, George. The extra gloaty bumper sticker of the season.

Maybe it’s just a little trick of the mind, kind of visual Freudian slip, but have you noticed how close Sarah Palin’s last name is to the word pain? Just take one thin little sliver of a letter out, and Palin becomes pain.

Pain rhymes with McCain too. Is that an accident? Oh, no, I don’t think so.

In either case, the polite response to this request for a vote is No Thanks 2008.

Eight years of pain under the Republicans in the White House has been long enough for me.

Did you know, for instance, that John McCain has put together a little $4 Billion legislative gift to the oil companies while he runs around telling the rest of us little people that he can’t afford to do anything that would help us out of this energy crisis? For shame, John McCain!

Barack Obama is going to be the next President of the United States, and you had better get used to the idea. Some people won’t have a hard time accepting the idea, especially those people who felt a touch of bile rise up the throat every time they say “President Bush”.

It isn't just because John McCain is old. A person can be old and still remain relevant and be able to contribute meaningfully. It has to do with John McCain's place in time. John McCain has failed to update his ideas.

I want to try to put this in a nice way, but it’s a hard thing to tell someone that their time is over. The Age of John McCain is over. John McCain’s political career is finished. The time for John McCain to be elected to anything is done.

I’ll put this in another way: John McCain is history.

It isn’t just because John McCain is old. A person can be old and still remain relevant and be able to contribute meaningfully.

It has to do with John McCain’s place in time. John McCain has failed to update his ideas.

John McCain is a politician of the past. McCain embraces ideas and attitudes that are two generations out of date.

John McCain has no vision for the future of America. His agenda is one of defense, trying to delay progress, to fend off hope, to desperately cling to the old ways of thinking that he and his supporters are fond of.

John McCain is a relic of time gone by, of plans that didn’t work out, of limitations that most Americans have transcended.

The way of John McCain is the way of the failures of America’s past.

John McCain is history. Now is the time for America to do better than it has done. Now is the time for a candidate of the future. Now is the time for Barack Obama.

Take a look at the narrow gaze of cable television, and you might think that the only elections being held tomorrow are the presidential elections in Montana and South Dakota. Turn off the tube, however, and look for election information on your own, and you’ll see that there’s a lot going on beyond the presidential election.

Tomorrow in Alabama, for example, there will be a primary election to determine the Democratic nominee for United States Senate to go head to head against Jeff Sessions, the incumbent Republican.

My bet is on Vivian Figures, the most experienced, most coherent of all the Democratic contenders.

Figures is for strong education for all children, for trade that keeps jobs in the USA, for a health care system that serves all Americans instead of just the insurance companies, for an end to the drain of American dollars into the Iraq War. Vivian Figures isn’t a partisan ideologue out to score points. Her ideas for America just make sense.

As of last night, Barack Obama has the majority of pledged delegates for the Democratic presidential convention. Barack Obama also has the support of most of the committed superdelegates. There are a few small state primaries still to be held – Puerto Rico, South Dakota and Montana are next – but for all intents and purposes, the Democratic primary competition is over. Barack Obama has won.

Barack Obama will be.

Last week, after John Edwards brought announced his unexpected endorsement of Barack Obama for President, the Obama-Edwards presidential ticket was the hot new idea in the 2008 campaign. Everybody was talking about what a great Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards would make. But, at the end of the week, John Edwards made another announcement: He does not want to be Barack Obama’s Vice President (although he didn’t rule out being Attorney General).

Now, another Vice Presidential candidate has risen to the top, becoming the consensus frontrunner to join Barack Obama on the 2008 White House ticket: Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Governor Sebelius has gained attention for her strong defiance of right wing activists in Kansas who have tried to shove through legislation to build new dirty coal-fired power plants. Sebelius has vetoed every coal bill they have sent her way.

Barack Obama and Sebelius share Kansas roots, and the Midwestern votes that Sebelius would bring in could wrap up the Electoral College for the Democratic campaign. If Al Gore of John Kerry had just been a bit stronger in the Midwest, after all, George W. Bush would have spent years ruining businesses instead of ruining America.

Grab this oval Obama/Sebelius 2008 campaign bumper sticker to encourage Barack Obama to choose Kathleen Sebelius for his vice presidential running mate in 2008.

If the state level, Florida for instance, is what establishes the Electoral College vote, then it's the local neighborhood that actually facilitates the Electoral College vote on Election Day. People don't all go to one place in Florida to vote, after all. They go to a designated polling station in their city or village. If you live in Miami, say so. Display a Miami for Obama bumper sticker.

Late Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill famously said, “All politics is local.” Oh, if that were true. With the creation and distribution of nationally focused media drowning out local sources of information, all politics in the USA has become national, with people paying more attention to cable TV broadcasts than to what’s going on right around them in their own neighborhoods.

It’s time to take that back, and reclaim the local identity as a relevant force in national politics. That’s one of the reasons the Irregular States catalog was created – to bring items like campaign bumper stickers to people that connect national issues to local identity.

Too many people grab a generic Barack Obama bumper sticker with a message that could apply anywhere. They put it on the back of their cars, and if you didn’t see the car’s license plate, they could be from anywhere.

It’s essential to remember that though the position of President of the United States is national, the election is actually an affair of the states. Unless a constitutional amendment is passed some time in the future, the Electoral College will be the group that actually elects the President – and delegates to the Electoral College will be elected in statewide popular elections.

That makes a statewide focus especially important, and state-level bumper stickers important too. Thus we see that bumper stickers like this one, proclaiming Florida is for Obama, may not be as prevalent as other Barack Obama bumper stickers, but they pack an extra punch.

Let’s take this localization of politics one step further, then. If the state level, Florida for instance, is what establishes the Electoral College vote, then it’s the local neighborhood that actually facilitates the Electoral College vote on Election Day. People don’t all go to one place in Florida to vote, after all. They go to a designated polling station in their city or village.

If you live in Miami, say so. Display a Miami for Obama bumper sticker.

So, support Barack Obama nationally, yes. Support Barack Obama in Florida, sure. But also support Barack Obama in Miami… or in whatever state and town you happen to live in. Focus the lens of progressive activism to affirm where you are in 2008.
