Yes, you read that headline correctly – this congressional election is taking place in 2011, not 2012. Jane Harman has resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives, provoking a special election.

To support the Winograd for Congress campaign, volunteer, talk to your friends, donate if you want to. You also can put this bumper sticker on your car, to say I’m With Winograd for Congress in 2011!.

David Dreier should choose to retire himself, or voters, in the primary election or general election of 2012, will choose retirement for Dreier.

Sometimes, a political slogan is born out of linguistic happenstance as much as from political need. That’s the case with a new slogan that’s made its way onto at least a couple of congressional campaign bumper stickers.

The slogan, at its core, relies on a simple rhyme: Retire Dreier.

“Dreier” in this slogan refers to Congressman David Dreier, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from the 26th district of California, on the marginal hills of metro Los Angeles. Dreier has run into some trouble recently, given some comments he made in a speech last week, saying that when it comes to the Patriot Act, guarantees of liberty and justice aren’t as important as the desire for security.

One bumper sticker, with a simply blue and black design, reads: Retire David Dreier – He’s out of touch with our values. Dreier may want to note that many Republicans value liberty much more than the big government apparatus of a Security State of the sort that’s been set up under the Patriot Act.

Another manifestation of the Retire Dreier slogan comes on a bumper sticker that advises: Time to Retire David Dreier, and shows a rather glum-faced Dreier to the right of the slogan.

The message, I think, is that David Dreier should choose to retire himself, or voters, in the primary election or general election of 2012, will choose retirement for Dreier.

Jim Costa himself has earned a progressive rating of just 19 out of a possible 100 for the 111th Congress.

The time was that U.S. Representative Jim Costa paraded the label of Blue Dog Democrat with pride. He thought that if he demonstrated his independence from Democratic leadership, he would earn points with Republican voters.

In 2009, however, it’s become clear that the Blue Dogs are not really independent at all. They’re dependent – upon the Republican Party.

In the 2008 elections, voters gave Democrats the White House and both houses of Congress because they wanted change from the years of failure under George W. Bush, but the Blue Dogs have been fighting against change. Jim Costa and the other Blue Dogs have been working to scuttle climate change legislation and health care reform.

Jim Costa himself has earned a progressive rating of just 19 out of a possible 100 for the 111th Congress. The Democrats of California’s 20th district have watched Costa pal around with the Republicans over and over again this year, and cringed.

That’s why this bumper sticker has been created as a protest against Jim Costa – not from a Republican perspective, but on behalf of the Democrats in Costa’s district. Democrats, we can do better than Jim Costa.

Why support the California Green Party? There are two reasons I can think of, offhand.

On the negative side, the California Democrats have been positively disappointing. On the national scale, there’s Nancy Pelosi, who seems dedicated to taking every good progressive idea off the table, and has been enmeshed with terrible Republican policies such as the use of torture. On the state scale, California Democrats have been celebrating the Supreme Court ruling upholding Proposition 8, denying marriage equality.

On the positive side, the Green Party of California is putting forward great candidates. In the 10th congressional district right now, Green Party candidate Jeremy Cloward is talking about ideas such as free day care, cutting military waste, and supporting marriage equality. Greens like Cloward are doing now what California voters are always hoping that the Democrats will do… someday.

Isn’t it time that you voted along with your actual values, instead of with the Democrats’ excuses? I think so, and that’s why I support the Green Party of California – with this bumper sticker.

Hewlett-Packard has never recovered from the damage done by Carly Fiorina. Why should California give Fiorina the chance to do the same damage to the USA?

Word in California politics is that Carly Fiorina is preparing to campaign against Senator Barbara Boxer in 2010. Carly Fiorina, who campaigned in favor of John McCain in 2008, is a registered Republican who supports the old trickle down economics that led the American economy to disaster.

As CEO of Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina was a train wreck. She was run out of the company for gross mismanagement, and was found to have conducted illegal surveillance against her rivals on the corporate board.

In a move quite similar to the scandal of the AIG bonuses, Carly Fiorina took over 20 million dollars as a payment when she left HP, even though her work there had been marred with remarkable failures. At the same time as she took those millions of dollars, she fired thousands of workers.

Hewlett-Packard has never recovered from the damage done by Carly Fiorina. Why should California give Fiorina the chance to do the same damage to the USA?
