If Michele Bachmann is the Answer, You’re Asking the Wrong Question

In the wake of her June 2011 debate performance promising to outlaw abortion even if the life of the mother is at stake, conservative America is falling over itself in praise of Michele Bachmann. Never mind that she supports the Patriot Act without reservation or reform. Never mind that Michele Bachmann has called the scientific study of evolution a “cult”. Never mind that in Michele Bachmann’s mind, carbon dioxide must be good because it’s “natural.” Never mind that Michele Bachmann is on the record trying to stop courts from ruling on whether the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional or not (a big hint that she knows her side would lose).

No, actually, mind that. Mind all of those things. After all that, if Michele Bachmann is still the answer in the 2012 presidential race, you must be asking the wrong question.

Sarah Palin: I Believe I Can Beat Barack Obama in 2012

It’s not hypothetical any more.

When Barbara Walters asked Sarah Palin point blank, “If you ran for president, could you beat Barack Obama?” Palin replied with a smile, “I believe so.” Right after that, she told the New York Times that she’s actively considering a run for President in 2012: “I’m engaged in the internal deliberations candidly, and having that discussion with my family.”

I can’t decide which is more frightening: that Sarah Palin actually thinks she can beat Barack Obama in 2012, or that Sarah Palin might be right.

John Raese is Wrong for West Virginia

It was just yesterday that John Raese got the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate to replace Robert Byrd, but already there’s a political bumper sticker out declaring that John Raese is wrong for West Virginia. Why? What makes Raese the wrong choice?

How about this tidbit for starters: John Raese is supporting the ambitions of elite investors and top executives at coal companies at the expense of coal miners’ safety. Raese seems to have forgotten all about the deadly explosion at Massey’s Upper Big Branch coal mine this year. Instead of calling for increased safety regulations, Raese says he wants to “unshackle” management at companies like Massey.

We’ve seen what happens when coal executives are allowed to operate mines under lax regulation. Raese’s proposal to remove protections is a kick in the face of coal miners, when they’re already down.

If You Oppose the Patriot Act, Don’t Vote for Martha Coakley

In a December 1, 2009 debate, Massachusetts Senate candidate Martha Coakley declared that the Patriot Act was all about protecting Americans’ civil liberties. This isn’t the first time Martha Coakley has said lovely things about the Patriot Act: she sung its praises back in 2005 as well. Has Martha Coakley been SLEEPING since 2001? Since its passage, the USA Patriot Act has enabled the FBI and other government agencies to engage in surveillance against innocent, law-abiding Americans.

If you oppose the Patriot Act, don’t vote for Martha Coakley.

John McCain is History

I want to try to put this in a nice way, but it’s a hard thing to tell someone that their time is over. The Age of John McCain is over. John McCain’s political career is finished. The time for John McCain to be elected to anything is done.

I’ll put this in another way: John McCain is history.

It isn’t just because John McCain is old. A person can be old and still remain relevant and be able to contribute meaningfully.

It has to do with John McCain’s place in time. John McCain has failed to update his ideas.

John McCain is a politician of the past. McCain embraces ideas and attitudes that are two generations out of date.

John McCain has no vision for the future of America. His agenda is one of defense, trying to delay progress, to fend off hope, to desperately cling to the old ways of thinking that he and his supporters are fond of.

John McCain is a relic of time gone by, of plans that didn’t work out, of limitations that most Americans have transcended.

The way of John McCain is the way of the failures of America’s past.

John McCain is history. Now is the time for America to do better than it has done. Now is the time for a candidate of the future. Now is the time for Barack Obama.

Vivian Figures for U.S. Senate from Alabama

Take a look at the narrow gaze of cable television, and you might think that the only elections being held tomorrow are the presidential elections in Montana and South Dakota. Turn off the tube, however, and look for election information on your own, and you’ll see that there’s a lot going on beyond the presidential election.

Tomorrow in Alabama, for example, there will be a primary election to determine the Democratic nominee for United States Senate to go head to head against Jeff Sessions, the incumbent Republican.

My bet is on Vivian Figures, the most experienced, most coherent of all the Democratic contenders.

Figures is for strong education for all children, for trade that keeps jobs in the USA, for a health care system that serves all Americans instead of just the insurance companies, for an end to the drain of American dollars into the Iraq War. Vivian Figures isn’t a partisan ideologue out to score points. Her ideas for America just make sense.
