Rick Perry used his position as Governor as Texas to organize a Christians-only public prayer event in a huge sports arena even larger than the Colosseum of Rome. He was trying to use the religious event to promote his own political ambitions.

Christians who understand their own religion understand that prayer isn’t supposed to work like that. Jesus urged his followers not pray loudly in public, seeking to gain attention for themselves, but to keep it private. Rick Perry’s prayer rally made Christianity into a caricature.

You know better than to fall for the profane shenanigans of the latest Texas Governor. Join Christian Voters Against Rick Perry.

The current anti-mosque crusade is just the newest part in Evangelical Christianity's agenda of intolerance.

Christians say that theirs is a religion of love, but Christians aren’t acting very loving as of late. They’re pushing for the extension of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They’re using the military to push their faith onto American soldiers. They’re campaigning against religious liberty for the followers of other religions.

The current anti-mosque crusade is just the newest part in Evangelical Christianity’s agenda of intolerance. The Christian Right may have a smile on its face, but its message is pure hate. This bumper sticker represents that attitude pretty well, with an evangelist who stands before you, with a happy face, holding a crucifix, asking, You don’t mind if I cram this down your throat a little bit, do you?

Do you mind? Golly, but I sure do.

Do you support the Constitution? Do you support the First Amendment? Do you support freedom of speech? Do you support freedom for everybody, not just for yourself, and not just for people you agree with?

If you support Free Speech, let the mosque be. You don’t have to like it. You don’t have to approve of it. In fact, it’s not your job to approve the mosque or not. It’s your job and my job as American citizens to support one another’s freedom.

Just let the mosque be. Is that too much to ask?

If your answer is “yes,” then I’d like to gently suggest that you have a fundamental problem with the idea of America.

As far as these religious zealots are concerned, there's only one right way to do things: Their way, as defined by the rules made by shepherds thousands of years ago.

Right wing Christian extremists seem to believe that it’s their business what other people do with their own bodies. Their blue laws still keep people from buying alcohol across huge sections of the United States. They push against the ability of men and women alike to control their own reproductive abilities, at the same time as they try to make consensual sex between adults a crime. Blasting extramarital sex, they the Religious Right then uses church funds to pass legislation forbidding same-sex couples from getting married.

If they want to practice a form of religion that’s out of touch with the present day world, that’s their business. Unfortunately, the right wing Christian activists can never leave it at that. They’ve got to go around telling everyone else what to do.

As far as these religious zealots are concerned, there’s only one right way to do things: Their way, as defined by the rules made by shepherds thousands of years ago. It’s time to tell the Religious Right, loud and clear, Get Your Bible Off My Body!
