Newt Gingrich is the guy who took the entire USA along for the ride on his political crusade in the 1990s. He shut down the government, and nearly wrecked American business as vital services caused the commerce infrastructure to disintegrate. Then, Gingrich was kicked out of Congress.

Now, Newt Gingrich is coming back and saying that “experience” qualifies him to be made President of the United States. Please. Newt Gingrich couldn’t handle being President of his local PTA.

Michigan knows what the consequences of poor leadership are, and people from Detroit all the way up to the UP are finished with politicians who play sophomoric ideological games when the public good is at stake. That’s why, in 2012, Michigan voters are opposed to the presidential election of Newt Gingrich.

The facts show, however, that energy development is moving forward at a fast pace. Over 8,000 leases are currently active along the coasts of the USA. Data from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement from this morning show that, over the last half year, over 3,200 new permits for offshore drilling activity have been granted. Add to these statistics the large number of drilling operations on land, and you get a picture of a thriving energy industry that’s making money hand over fist.

And where is that oil money going to? Well, some of it is going to Dan Benishek. Benishek’s campaign last year took substantial amounts of cash from oil and mining companies.

These contributions appear to have interfered with Benishek’s judgment. On issues of energy and the environment, Dan Benishek is out of touch – with voters, and with reality.

So who will the vice presidential nominee under Barack Obama be? Let’s consider someone who is like Hillary Clinton, but without all the baggage.

Consider Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. Governor Granholm has obvious demographic similarities to Hillary Clinton, without all the baggage that Hillary Clinton would bring.

Besides that, Granholm has executive experience of the sort that Barack Obama needs to balance his ticket. Finally, consider the rancor with which the Michigan delegate problems were resolved. Adding Jennifer Granholm to the Obama for President campaign would go a long way toward Democratic Party healing.

One of the points of denial Hillary Clinton supporters are clinging to is the desperate hope that somehow, in spite of the rules, the Michigan election in which Barack Obama did not even run as a candidate, would be counted, and Michigan’s delegates would be seated at the Democratic presidential convention.

The truth is that, even if that did happen, Hillary Clinton would lose the nomination. This is getting pathetic.

Michigan Democrats can take action to help end the nightmare. They can show their strong support for the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, making it clear that the Clinton campaign cannot use Michigan as a tool in its power games.
