We’ve come a long way since then. In the 2012 presidential election, no one in South Carolina is accusing Obama of being too white. The Democrats know that there are more important things than who’s white and who’s black. It’s about who’s qualified and who’s competent.

I’m grateful to see that there are some Democrats in Congress who are willing to pay attention to the values of their constituents rather than marching orders from on high in the Democratic Party. Among these independent, antiwar Democrats is James McGovern from Massachusetts.

Representative McGovern delivered a strong speech in the House of Representatives yesterday, denouncing Obama’s decision to send tens of thousands of additional soldiers to fight and die in Afghanistan. McGovern looked at the reality of the Afghan situation and stated, “I believe the President has reached the wrong conclusion. Sending 30,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan will make it 30,000 times harder to extricate ourselves from this mess. If our fight is truly with al Qaeda, then we’re in the wrong country. They have moved to Pakistan. Indeed, General Jones has told us that there are maybe less than 100 al Qaeda members in Afghanistan . With the troop increase announced by the President last night, we will have over 100,000 U.S. service men and women in Afghanistan . Do we really need 100,000 troops to go after less than a hundred al Qaeda?”

Joe Wilson, in response to Obama’s declaration that health care reform would not deliver government-funded medicine to illegal aliens, shouted, “You lie!”

The implication was that Barack Obama is involved in some sort of conspiracy to encourage illegal immigrants by providing them with free medical care. That’s just not true. As President Obama repeatedly explained, a public option would be for citizens. Tax credits would be for citizens. You can’t claim a tax credit if you’re here illegally.

So no, Joe Wilson, you lie.

As President, Barack Obama is working to deny equal rights to gay and lesbian Americans. This week, Obama sent his lawyers out to argue that the Defense of Marriage Act, legislation that blocks marriage equality at the national level, should be maintained.

Among the arguments Obama used to justify the Defense of Marriage Act is that the law does not discriminate against same-sex couples because it allows gay men to marry women just like heterosexual men can, and it allows lesbians to marry men just like heterosexual women can. That Obama would make such an argument with a straight face is in itself cause for concern. It’s as ridiculous as claiming that racial segregation of school children is not discrimination so long as children of all ethnic backgrounds have the equal ability to go to school with other children of their own ethnicity.

It ought to be clear now that, in spite of the hopes of 2008, gay and lesbian Americans cannot rely on Barack Obama to respect their standing as equal citizens deserving protection under the law. That’s why, for Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign, the message self respecting GLBT Americans will give to Obama is No we can’t.

The election is over. It doesn’t matter whether Barack Obama was on “your team,” or whether you campaigned as part of “his team.” As of his inauguration, he will be the principal executor of a surveillance state. As long as the president and the agents of the president are watching, it is incumbent upon defenders of liberty to watch back.
